Time Of Singing is a literary Christian poetry magazine with "Christian" defined in the widest sense of the word. Poems that are not "preachy" and "show, not tell" are preferred. Sermons and "greeting card" poetry have valid but different purposes. I would suggest you obtain a sample back issue ($4) to help you ascertain TOS's style. You will be pleasantly surprised! I welcome fresh rhyme, beg for more forms, and appreciate well-crafted free verse.

PLEASE, SASE with all submissions. You may submit via email.

I will comment on work that has merit and is close to publication, and will clear major revisions with poet. All contributors receive one copy of the issue in which their work appears.

Of course, subscriptions are always welcome! One year (four issues) is $15.00.

Thank your for your interest in Time Of Singing. I look forward to reading your work.

Editor’s Aria (from Winter 2004/2005)

THIS ISSUE I’M WRITING TO ASK A FAVOR of all of you who submit poetry. In may ways I’m still back in the Stone Age, as I don’t have a cell phone and only after I moved a few years ago did I get cable TV. My minivan still has “roll up” windows. But I am a big user of the web and e mail, which I hope has benefited many of you in making it easier and cheaper to submit work.

I have been scanning the poetry into my computer instead of typing it. From over three hours of work I can now have poetry ready to proofread in a half hour. This kind of time savings is a relief to my schedule. But right now I receive poetry in all kinds of formats and fonts. This gives my scanner fits, and it is more than happy to then give me fits as I try to make all the format corrections.

To make this process more efficient, I am asking that when you submit poetry you follow these guidelines. Let me say here that if your work doesn’t meet these it will not be rejected for that reason. I know sometimes typewriters die and hand written stuff is OK (I’ll go ahead and type that). Or maybe you already have a gadzillion copies printed in a particular format. That’s OK too. But I’m going to try to “ease” folks into this new “paradigm” in the coming months, frankly, because it will save me so much time.

  • Make your work flush left, with a 1 inch margin (or so) from the edge. (If it has a varied style, like… centered, or has indented lines, that’s OK.)

  • Choose a “serif” font, that is, a font like Times New Roman or Palatia (the font I use for TOS). “Sans serif” fonts like Ariel and Tahoma are difficult for the scanner to read. It needs the little “flourish” at the end and beginning of letters to distinguish words more accurately.

  • Please single space, with double space between stanzas.

Again, these are not iron clad rules. I am requesting you follow them if possible. I’d rather read your work than have you hold it because it doesn’t line up with this format. If you have any questions, by all means contact me. I appreciate all of you and your support of TOS. As always, I look forward to receiving all of your envelopes.
